Why MOUND CITY?

Saint Louis, MO. was nick named “Mound CIty” as a result of the indigenous people in the area having built numerous temple and residential earthwork mounds on both sides of the Mississippi River.  Cahokia Mounds, located in Collinsville, IL, being the regional center.  Many of the major earthworks within St. Louis boundaries were demolished during the city’s development.

1884St. Louis Philatelic Society is formed
1886A committee met in New York City on September 13, 1886, and adopted the name “American Philatelic Association” (APA) for the newly formed organization. The following day, John K. Tiffany, a prominent St. Louis attorney, and ardent philatelist, was elected president, a position he held until 1896.

St. Louis Philatelic Society becomes Chapter #4 of the American Philatelic Association.
1889St. Louis hosts the 4th Annual American Philatelic Association Convention.
1897American Philatelic Association changes its name to American Philatelic Society but only for a few months but returns it back to the American Philatelic Association.
1908American Philatelic Association again changes its name to American Philatelic Society permanently.
1919St. Louis hosts the 34th Annual American Philatelic Society Convention.
1927St. Louis hosts the 42nd Annual American Philatelic Society Convention.
1934Mound City Stamp is meeting at the Melbourne Hotel in the Alexander Room. President is J. Edward Vining and the VP is Alfred J. Owen.
Mound City 19351935Mound City Stamp Club hosts the Society of Philatelic Americans Convention: Hotel Melbourne, St. Louis, MO, August 22-25, 1935.
Mound City 19401940Mound City Stamp Club hosts Jr. Stamp Exposition: Hotel Melbourne, St. Louis, MO, May 4-6, 1940.
1952Feb. 28th, 1952, Mound City Stamp Club becomes Chapter #344 of the American Philatelic Society.
1956St. Louis hosts the 70th Annual American Philatelic Society Convention.
1976Greater St. Louis Stamp Club is formed. President: Carl Uccello, Vice President: Robert Partney, Secretary: Dorothy Reinhold and Treasurer: Joe Singer. Constitution, Newsletter Vol. 1
1995St. Louis hosts the 109th Annual American Philatelic Society Convention.
1997Greater St. Louis Stamp Club becomes Chapter #1011 of the American Philatelic Society.
2007The Mound City Stamp Club (#344) and the Greater St. Louis Stamp Club (#1011) are merged to form the “Greater Mound City Stamp Club” and retains APS Chapter #344.
2008Aug. 24, 2008 – Original Greater Mound City Stamp Club Constitution is ratified.
GMCSC2015Based on the winning design submitted by Frank Kollinger in a club wide contest, the Club announces the approval of a new club logo in August 2015.
